Wyoming

Live in Wyoming and need an auto electrician? It's a big, leafy family suburb strung along the Pacific Highway, so most of the work is on daily drivers, school-run cars and the caravan parked down the side of the house.

Common auto electrical jobs in Wyoming

Wyoming is mainly residential, with around 10,000 people, rainforest-lined streets and bushwalking close by. Cars here are family cars first, and the faults follow that pattern.

Battery or starter?

A click or a slow crank in a Wyoming driveway at half past seven, with kids to drop off, usually starts the same guessing game: is it the battery or the starter? A battery test answers most of it. If the battery is healthy and the car still only clicks, the starter motor, its solenoid or a poor connection is the likely cause. Our guide is it my starter motor or my battery walks through the checks you can safely do before calling for help.

Leaves, blocked drains and wet wiring

Wyoming's leafy streets drop a lot of litter, and it builds up in the tray under the windscreen and in sunroof drains. When those drains block, rainwater can find its way into the cabin, the footwells or even a fuse box. The result can be strange electrical faults after a storm: wipers with a mind of their own, dead central locking or a dash full of warning lights. Clear the leaves out regularly and check for damp carpet. Water damage caught early is much cheaper to fix.

Windows and central locking

With school runs, sport and shopping, family cars in Wyoming open and close their doors many times a day. The wires running through each door hinge flex every time and eventually crack, while window regulators and lock actuators simply wear out. If a window stops halfway or one door won't lock, the fault is usually in that door rather than the whole system. Our guide on electric windows that have stopped working explains what to check first.

Caravans in the driveway

Plenty of Wyoming homes have a caravan, camper trailer or box trailer parked down the side. Before the school holidays, check the towbar wiring, the plug and every light, and make sure the van's battery actually charges on the road. Many newer tow vehicles have smart alternators that won't charge a caravan battery properly through a simple wire, so a DC-DC charger is often needed. Our guide why isn't my caravan battery charging while towing explains why.

Wyoming auto electrical questions

How long should a car battery last in Wyoming?

Most car batteries last somewhere around three to five years, but short trips, hot summers and lots of accessories can cut that down. If your battery is more than three years old and the car cranks slower than it used to, have it tested. A test only takes a few minutes and shows whether the battery can still hold and deliver a proper charge.

Why do I get electrical faults after heavy rain?

Water getting in where it shouldn't is the usual cause. Blocked drains under the windscreen or around the sunroof, perished door seals and cracked tail light seals all let water reach connectors and control modules. Dry the car out and clear the drains first. If the faults continue, have the affected plugs cleaned, dried and checked before corrosion sets in.

Local tip for Wyoming

Wyoming is only a few kilometres from Gosford, so many trips are short. If that's how your car is used, take it for a longer drive every week or two. Twenty minutes or more at a steady speed gives the alternator time to recharge the battery properly. It also dries out moisture in the exhaust and engine, which short trips never quite manage.
