Common auto electrical jobs in Kanwal

Kanwal mixes lakeside parks, retirement living and family streets near the Pacific Highway and Wallarah Road. That gives it more boat, caravan and low-mileage car work than the newer suburbs to the west.

Boat trailers on Tuggerah Lake

Craigie Park looks out over Tuggerah Lake, and plenty of Kanwal residents keep a tinny or small boat for fishing on the lakes. Lake water is brackish rather than full seawater, but backing a trailer in still soaks the lights and wiring. Water gets into lamps and plugs, and the wiring corrodes from the inside. Sealed LED trailer lights and a quick freshwater rinse after each launch make a big difference. Our guide on wiring a 7-pin trailer plug helps when it's time to redo a plug.

Parking sensors for older drivers

Kanwal has several aged care and retirement communities, and many older drivers find tight car parks harder as time goes on. Reversing sensors and cameras can make parking much easier. Sensors fit into the bumper and beep as you get closer, while a camera shows what's behind. Both can be fitted to most cars. Choose a clear, simple display and have it installed neatly so there are no loose wires near the pedals.

Low-mileage cars that sit

Retirees in Kanwal often drive only a few times a week, to the shops at Lake Haven or an appointment nearby. Cars that do so few kilometres tend to suffer flat batteries, particularly modern ones with alarms and computers that draw small amounts of current around the clock. A smart maintainer on a power point in the garage keeps the battery topped up. Replace the battery every few years, before it fails, rather than waiting to be stranded.

Caravans parked between trips

Kanwal and the streets around it have plenty of caravans parked in driveways between trips. Months of sitting can leave the van's battery flat, connectors corroded and lights that work one day and not the next. Before heading off, check the trailer plug, brakes and breakaway battery, and make sure the van's battery is charging. Our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing covers the common causes.

Kanwal auto electrical questions

How do I stop my boat trailer lights failing after launching at Tuggerah Lake?

Disconnect the trailer plug before you back into the water, so the hot lights don't suck in water as they cool. Fit sealed LED lights designed for submersion, rinse the trailer with fresh water afterwards and spray the plug with a water dispersant. Check the earth wire too, because a corroded earth causes most dim or flickering trailer lights.

My push-button start car sometimes won't recognise the key. What should I check?

Start with the battery in the key fob, as a weak one is the usual cause. Keep the key away from phones and other electronics, which can interfere. Most cars have a backup method, such as holding the fob against the start button, explained in the owner's manual. If a new fob battery doesn't fix it, the car's aerial or immobiliser may need checking.

Local tip for Kanwal

If you launch a boat at Tuggerah Lake, wait until the trailer lights have cooled before backing into the water, or unplug them altogether. Hot globes hitting cold water can crack, and the sudden cooling draws water into lamp housings. Rinse the trailer with fresh water when you get home and leave the plug to dry before reconnecting.
