Common auto electrical jobs in Budgewoi

Budgewoi is surrounded by Lake Munmorah, Budgewoi Lake and the Pacific Ocean, with boat ramps at Budgewoi Bridge and Munmorah State Conservation Area just up the road. Camping, fishing and the beach drive most of the auto electrical jobs here.

Boat trailer plugs at Budgewoi Bridge

With boat ramps on both sides of Budgewoi Bridge, local trailers spend a lot of time near water. The plug at the front of the trailer often fails first, as moisture causes corrosion behind the pins. When rewiring, use marine-grade tinned cable, crimp joints with heatshrink, and run the loom inside the drawbar where it's protected. Our guide on wiring a 7-pin trailer plug gives the standard pin layout.

Dual batteries for camping

Munmorah State Conservation Area has campgrounds a short drive from town, and many locals head there or further afield with a fridge in the back. A dual battery system lets you run the fridge and lights without touching the starting battery. In newer vehicles, a DC-DC charger is usually the better choice. Our guide on how a dual battery system works explains the setup.

Anderson plugs for fridges and trailers

Anderson plugs are the go-to connector for running a fridge, charging a camper trailer battery or plugging in a portable solar panel. They handle much more current than a cigarette lighter socket. The plug needs to be wired with the right cable size and a fuse or circuit breaker close to the battery. Our guide on wiring an Anderson plug covers polarity and crimping.

Salt on beach vehicles

Vehicles that are often parked by Budgewoi Beach and the lakes pick up a lot of salt. It settles on alternator terminals, starter connections and fuse boxes under the bonnet, where it slowly eats into the metal. A gentle freshwater rinse under the bonnet (avoiding the intake and electrical modules) and a corrosion-inhibiting spray on exposed connections help keep things working.

Fridges that flatten the battery

A 12V fridge left running overnight on the starting battery is a common reason for a car that won't start the next morning after a fishing trip. A low-voltage cut-out set at the right level protects the battery. If the fridge is used often, a second battery is the proper fix. If your battery is already damaged by repeated deep discharges, it may not recover and will need replacing.

Budgewoi auto electrical questions

Do I need a dual battery for a weekend at Munmorah?

If you're running a 12V fridge for more than a night, a second battery is a good idea. It keeps the fridge running without risk of a flat starting battery in the bush. For one night, a portable power station or a battery box charged at home may be enough. Think about how long you stay and how much power your fridge uses.

Why do my trailer plug pins keep going green?

Green or white build-up on the pins is corrosion from moisture and salt. It is common around Budgewoi because the trailer spends time near water. Clean the pins with a small wire brush or contact cleaner, then use a little dielectric grease. Store the plug covered and off the ground, and replace it if the pins are pitted or loose.

Local tip for Budgewoi

Before a camping trip to Munmorah, run the fridge at home for a day on the second battery and see how far the voltage drops. You'll find out quickly if the battery is tired or the cabling is too thin, instead of discovering it at the campsite with a fridge full of warm food.
