Common auto electrical jobs in Empire Bay
Empire Bay is a village of about 2,500 people that began as Sorrento and was renamed in 1908. Its original general store still stands. Buses run to Woy Woy, Ettalong Beach, Kincumber and Erina Fair, but most families rely on the car and many tow a boat.
Brakes for bigger boats
A trailer boat over 750 kg loaded needs brakes, and many owners go for electric-over-hydraulic or electric brakes. That means a brake controller in the tow vehicle, wired with proper cable and a fuse. Our guide on how to install an electric brake controller explains the setup. Saltwater immersion is hard on brake components, so have the system checked regularly.

Headlights on Empire Bay Drive
Parts of Empire Bay Drive run through bushland with limited street lighting, and wildlife can be on the road at dusk. Headlights that have faded with age, or lenses gone yellow, make that drive harder than it needs to be. New globes in both sides and properly aimed beams help most cars. Check both low and high beam monthly. Restoring yellowed lenses helps too.

Battery light on while driving
If the battery warning light comes on while you are driving, the alternator usually isn't charging. The car is running on battery power alone and won't get far. Switch off what you can and head somewhere safe. Our guide on the battery warning light while driving explains what to do next. Often it is a slipping or broken drive belt, a failed alternator or a loose cable, and an auto electrician can test which before you replace parts.

Reversing with a boat on
Backing a boat into a driveway or down a ramp is much easier with a good reversing camera. A camera on the tow vehicle helps line up the towball, while a wireless camera on the trailer shows what's behind the boat. Seal every connection and mount the trailer camera clear of the water line. Fuse the power feed so a fault in the trailer camera can't drain the car battery while it sits.

Empire Bay auto electrical questions
Do boat trailers in NSW need brakes?
In NSW, trailers with a loaded mass over 750 kg need brakes, and heavier trailers have further requirements. Many boat trailers are over 750 kg once the boat, motor and fuel are on. Check the trailer's compliance plate and weigh the loaded rig if you are unsure. If it needs brakes, have them fitted and wired properly.
Why are my headlights dim even with new globes?
Cloudy or yellowed lenses are the most common cause. Poor earths, corroded connectors and a weak charging voltage can also reduce brightness. Check that the lens is clear, then look at the plug behind the globe for heat damage or corrosion. If both headlights dim at idle and brighten when revving, have the charging system tested.
Local tip for Empire Bay
Before towing out of Empire Bay, walk around the rig with the lights on and someone pressing the brake. Check both indicators, the brake lights and the number plate light. Bushland stretches of Empire Bay Drive are no place to discover the trailer is dark, especially after sunset.
