Common auto electrical jobs in Canton Beach

Chinese fishermen worked the Tuggerah Lakes in the late 1850s, especially here, catching and curing fish to ship as far as China, and the beach is believed to take its name from them. Today it's homes and lakeside parkland a short drive from the shops on Main Road in Toukley, with caravan parks and holiday houses nearby.

Campervans and house batteries

A campervan's house battery runs the fridge, lights and water pump, and it needs to recharge while you drive. Older vans often use a simple isolator, which can struggle with modern smart alternators. A DC-DC charger gives the house battery a proper charge whatever the alternator is doing. Our guide on choosing a DC-DC charger or an isolator compares the two.

Caravans that arrive with a flat battery

It's common to pull into a lakeside site after a long drive and find the caravan battery is lower than when you left. The charge wire through the trailer plug is often too thin for the distance, so very little reaches the van. A heavier cable, an Anderson plug at the drawbar and a DC-DC charger in the van usually fix it. Our guide on why a caravan battery won't charge while towing explains why.

Parking by the water

Cars parked near the lake for days or weeks pick up moisture in tail light housings, plugs and battery terminals. White or green crust on the terminals, a tail light that flickers or a number plate light that dies are all early signs. Clean terminals, dry out wet lamp housings and replace perished seals before the corrosion spreads into the wiring.

Indicators flashing fast

Swapping indicator globes for LEDs saves power, but it often makes the indicators flash much faster. That's because the flasher reads the lower current as a blown globe. An LED-compatible flasher relay or the correct load resistors fix it on most older vehicles; newer cars may need the setting changed. Our guide on why indicators flash fast explains the causes.

Canton Beach auto electrical questions

Why won't my caravan fridge stay cold while I'm towing?

On 12V, a three-way fridge draws a lot of current, and the long cable run from the car's battery to the van loses voltage along the way. Many fridges also need the car's ignition on to run on 12V. Heavier cable, a proper fridge circuit through the trailer plug, and sometimes a DC-DC charger solve it. Pre-cooling the fridge on 240V before leaving helps too.

Do LED globes make my indicators flash fast?

Often, yes. LED globes draw much less current than standard globes, and many flashers take that as a sign that a globe has blown, so they flash faster to warn you. An LED-compatible flasher relay or load resistors usually fix it. On some newer cars, the fix is a setting in the body computer instead.

Local tip for Canton Beach

If you arrive at Canton Beach with a caravan or campervan for more than a few days, check the house battery voltage each morning and note it down. A battery that drops lower each day, even with power connected, may have a failing cell or a charger fault, and catching it early saves a flat battery on the drive home.
