Common auto electrical jobs in Terrigal

Terrigal is a beach town with a working boat ramp at The Haven, plenty of holiday units and steep streets climbing away from the Esplanade. That mix gives it its own pattern of jobs.

Launching at The Haven

The Terrigal Haven ramp was upgraded in 2016 and gives boaters direct access to the open ocean, which is rare for the southern Central Coast. Ocean launches mean the trailer often goes deeper into salt water than on a calm lake. Lights fail, plugs corrode and wiring rots inside the trailer frame. Fitting submersible LED lights, running a fresh harness with sealed joins and rinsing everything after each trip will save a lot of grief. Our guide on wiring a 7-pin trailer plug shows the standard layout.

Holiday cars that won't start

Lots of Terrigal units and houses are holiday homes, and the car parked in the garage may only be driven every few weeks. Modern cars draw a small current even when switched off, so a battery can go flat in two or three weeks. If you come up from Sydney and find the car dead, a battery maintainer on a timer or simply disconnecting the battery between visits can help. Our guide on why your car battery keeps going flat explains parasitic drain.

Sea spray near the Esplanade

Cars parked along Terrigal Esplanade or in apartment car parks facing the beach get a constant coating of salt mist. Headlight and tail light connectors corrode, earth points under the bonnet go green and door switches start to play up. The first sign is often one light not working or a dashboard light that comes and goes. Cleaning and greasing connectors once or twice a year is a cheap fix. Our guide on how to check and replace a fuse is a good first step when something stops working.

Summer queues and hot cabins

On summer weekends, Terrigal Drive and the Scenic Highway can back up as visitors head for the beach. Sitting still in the sun is when a weak air conditioner shows itself. If the air goes warm when you stop but cools again when moving, the condenser fan or its relay may be at fault rather than the gas. A quick electrical check is worth doing first. Repairing or recharging the refrigerant side must be done by a licensed technician.

Terrigal auto electrical questions

My boat trailer lights work at home but fail at the ramp. Why?

Usually water. Once the lights are dunked, water gets into a cracked lens, a poorly sealed join or the plug itself and causes a short or a bad earth. Cold water on a hot globe can also crack it. Submersible LEDs and sealed connectors fix most of this. Unplug the trailer before launching so you're not powering lights underwater.

How long can I leave my car at a holiday house before the battery goes flat?

It depends on the car and the battery's age, but many modern cars will struggle after two to four weeks. Alarms, keyless entry and computer memory all draw a little power. A small solar trickle charger or a smart charger on a timer is the easiest fix. If the car goes flat within a few days, there may be a fault draining it.

Can I use a normal battery to run my boat's fish finder and lights?

A car starting battery isn't designed for long, slow draws. A deep-cycle or marine battery handles that much better and lasts longer. Keep it in a vented box, use marine-grade tinned cable and fuse it close to the battery. Salt air near The Haven makes good terminals and sealed connections even more important.

Local tip for Terrigal

After a session out from The Haven, give the trailer a freshwater hose down before you drive home through town, paying attention to the lights, plug and any exposed wiring along the drawbar. Leave the plug cap open for a while so it dries out. Ten minutes of rinsing after each trip stops most of the corrosion that otherwise has you replacing lights every season.
