Common auto electrical jobs in Blue Bay

Blue Bay covers less than half a square kilometre, with around 1,000 residents, a few streets of homes and holiday rentals, and a small unpatrolled beach. Parking near the sand along Werrina Parade and Blue Street fills quickly in summer.

Parking sensors for tight streets

When the spots near the beach fill up on a warm weekend, Blue Bay's narrow streets turn into a game of squeezing between driveways and other cars. Rear parking sensors, or front and rear sensors on bigger SUVs, make those tight spots far less stressful. Sensors need to be mounted at the right height and angle, and the wiring has to be sealed against the sand and salt that find their way into bumpers here.

Dashcam parking mode and flat batteries

With cars parked on the street, many Blue Bay owners use a dashcam with parking mode to record bumps and scrapes. The catch is that the camera keeps drawing power with the engine off. Without a low-voltage cut-off, a few days of recording can leave the battery too flat to start the car. Hardwire the camera through a fuse tap with an adjustable cut-off, and set it high enough to leave starting power in reserve.

Boot lights and doors left ajar

After a day at the beach, a boot that isn't quite latched or a cabin light switched to 'on' can drain the battery overnight. Sand in a door switch or tailgate latch can also stop the car from knowing the door is closed. Check the lights are off before you walk away, and clean sand from latches and switches. If a globe has failed, our guide on replacing an interior light globe shows how.

Holiday cars and corroded terminals

Cars that come up for a week in a Blue Bay rental, or sit outside between visits, spend days in salty air without being driven. That combination of low charge and corrosion on the terminals is what leads to the morning a car just clicks. Before a long stay, check the terminals are clean and tight. If the car will be parked for a while, disconnecting the negative terminal can help, though you may need radio codes or to reset some settings.

Blue Bay auto electrical questions

Can I fit parking sensors to an older car myself?

Many kits are designed for DIY fitting, but it takes care. You'll need to drill the bumper at the correct height and spacing, run the wiring into the boot or cabin, and connect power to the reversing light circuit. A poor drill angle or bad connection gives false alarms. If you're not confident, an auto electrician can fit and test them.

How long can a dashcam run in parking mode before my battery goes flat?

It depends on the camera's draw, the battery's size and health, and the cut-off voltage you set. Some setups last a day or two, others much less. The cut-off is what protects you: set it so the camera shuts down while the battery still has enough charge to start the car, and check the setting after any battery replacement.

Local tip for Blue Bay

If you're staying a week in Blue Bay and won't drive much, start the car and take it for a proper drive halfway through. A quick spin down to Toowoon Bay and back isn't enough; aim for twenty minutes or more. It keeps the battery healthy for the drive home and gives you a chance to check the lights still work.
