Common auto electrical jobs in Bushells Ridge

Bushells Ridge sits on the northern edge of the Central Coast, between Woongarrah, Blue Haven and Wyee, and much of its land is zoned for industry and employment. The Motorway Link, built in the 1980s, runs about 7 km from Doyalson to the M1 here, so heavy vehicles are the main traffic.

24V trucks off the motorway

Trucks using the Motorway Link to reach the M1 run long hours, and most heavy vehicles use 24V systems with two batteries in series. If one battery fails, the other is overworked and soon follows, so they're best replaced as a matched pair. Check the earth straps and starter cables at the same time, because loose or corroded heavy cables cause slow cranking that looks just like a battery fault.

Beacons for industrial sites

Industrial sites and construction yards usually want vehicles to run an amber beacon while on site. A fixed beacon should be wired through its own fuse and switch, with a relay for high-draw units, and mounted where it can be seen from every side. Magnetic beacons that plug into the accessory socket suit occasional use, but on a daily work vehicle the cord and plug wear out quickly.

Plant and machinery batteries

Earthmoving gear, generators and site machinery often sit for days between jobs, and their batteries go flat or sulphate. A battery isolator stops slow drains while the machine is parked, and a smart charger or solar maintainer keeps it ready. Dust and vibration on site loosen terminals, so check and tighten them at every service. Our guide on testing a battery applies to most 12V machine batteries too.

Trailer sockets that take a beating

Plant trailers and tippers are hitched and unhitched all day, and dragged plugs, stretched curly cords and mud in the socket cause most trailer light failures. Heavy-duty sockets with spring covers, a support so the cord can't drag, and a squirt of contact cleaner now and then keep them working. Our guide on 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs helps when you're matching different trucks and trailers.

Bushells Ridge auto electrical questions

Should I replace both batteries on a 24V truck at once?

Usually, yes. In a 24V system the two batteries are wired in series and share the work. If one is new and one is old, the weaker battery limits the pair and the new one gets overworked. A matched pair of the same type, size and age gives the longest life. Check the cables, terminals and earth straps while you're at it.

Do I need a relay for an amber beacon?

It depends on the beacon. Many LED beacons draw little current and can run through a fused switch. Older rotating beacons and larger light bars draw more, and a relay protects the switch and the wiring. Either way, put the fuse close to the battery and size the cable to the beacon's rated current.

Local tip for Bushells Ridge

If your work vehicle stays at a Bushells Ridge site over a long weekend, switch off anything that draws power, such as two-way radios, trackers and dashcams in parking mode. A battery isolator makes that one switch. Coming back to a dead battery at a quiet industrial site, with nobody around to give you a jump, wastes a morning.
