Common auto electrical jobs in Mardi
Around 3,600 people live in Mardi, about 3 km south-west of Wyong, mostly in separate houses on estates off Yarramalong Road. About half of local workers drive to work and very few use public transport, so the car does the heavy lifting.
Daily drivers and tired alternators
When a car does the commute every weekday, the alternator works hard for years without a break. A failing one often gives warnings first: headlights that dim at idle, a battery light that flickers on rough roads, or a battery that keeps going flat even after being replaced. Testing the charging output takes minutes and can save buying a battery you didn't need. Our guide on how to know if an alternator needs replacing lists the signs.

Family car air conditioning
Mardi's family SUVs and people movers do school runs, sport and commutes in all weather, and the air conditioning runs most of the year. Common electrical faults include a blower that only works on the highest speed, a compressor that won't engage, and cooling fans that don't switch on. Those can be tested and repaired by an auto electrician. Topping up or recovering refrigerant is a job for a licensed technician.

Box trailers for weekend jobs
Garden waste runs, furniture pick-ups and trips to the tip mean a lot of Mardi households own or borrow a box trailer. If your car came with a towbar but no trailer socket, or the socket has stopped working, a vehicle-specific wiring harness is the cleanest fix. On newer cars it can also tell the car's computer a trailer is connected. Our guide on whether you need a towbar wiring harness explains why.

The second car in the driveway
In two-car households, one car often sits most of the week while the other does the driving. Modern cars draw a small current even when switched off, to keep alarms, remote locking and computers alive, and a week or two of that can leave the battery too flat to start. A battery maintainer plugged in overnight once a week, or a regular longer drive, keeps the spare car ready.

Mardi auto electrical questions
How do I know if it's my battery or my alternator?
Check the voltage. With the engine off and the car rested, a healthy battery reads about 12.6 volts. With the engine running, the charging system should usually read between about 13.8 and 14.7 volts, although some newer cars vary this on purpose. If the running voltage stays near battery voltage, the alternator may not be charging. If the battery won't hold charge overnight, it's likely the battery.
Will a towbar wiring harness affect my car's warranty?
A vehicle-specific harness made for your model, fitted correctly, plugs into existing connectors and is designed not to interfere with the car's systems. Cutting into factory wiring is more likely to cause problems. If you're concerned, check your warranty terms or ask the dealer. Keep a record of what was fitted and who fitted it.
Local tip for Mardi
If you commute from Mardi every day, have the battery and charging system tested once a year, ideally before winter. Cold mornings are when a weak battery finally gives up. A quick test shows the battery's health and the alternator's output, and it's a lot easier than organising a jump start in the driveway before work.
